I'm going next week for my very first Massage Therapy appointment. I'm nervous. Anyone ever do it before? Is it gross to have a stranger's hands on your back? I'm starting to rethink it...

My wife gets a medical massage at least once a month. She says that it's no more awkward overall than a chiropractor or anything. That person isn't there to grope or anything, so she doesn't worry about it. Plus, I think she only goes to women, so the worry is less.

I've never had a professional massage or any massage therapy.

I requested a female massage therapist.
Before Covid, my daughter and I went to a nail salon and during my manicure, the nail artist gave me a hand massage and it was one of the best things I've ever felt in my life.

I've never had a professional massage or any massage therapy. Same. I have some neck and back issues that therapy would probably help, but I have had some less than desirable chiropractic experiences, so I'm hesitant on massages because of it.

It's not like going to the chiropractor, is it?

I don't know....like, is there a difference between "massage therapy" and just getting a massage to feel relaxed? I don't think it would be exactly like being at a chiropractor, but I have no first-hand experience with a chiropractor or with a masseuse. But if I had to get the massage therapy, I also would want a female one. I feel that way about many doctors in general, too, i.e. I feel more comfortable with a female one.

It's not like going to the chiropractor, is it? My wife says it is not, but therapy to me sounds more intense than just a massage. So I worry it will hurt like some of my chiropractor visits. Maybe I will break down one day, but it won't be today.

I'm a little scared now. A friend who used to go said sometimes when she got home, she'd feel bruised all over!

I'm a little scared now. A friend who used to go said sometimes when she got home, she'd feel bruised all over! My wife will bruise after massage sometimes, but it depends on the method. My wife enjoys cupping and stone therapy and those can bruise more. Or when she is a lot tighter, it can bruise when the therapist finally gets a muscle to let loose. I wouldn't be scared, but know that it could bruise you. Or if you have a lot of neck and back pain, it might trigger a few sore spots.

Somehow that does not sound therapeutic to me if it is bruising you!

95% of it was fantastic. Sometimes it was so hard! She'd push really hard and I'd have to ask her to stop. She pushed down really hard and then slide up, for example, and it was excruciating! She said it was because my muscles were really tense there, and she was getting a lot of resistance, but I asked - could that be because I'm tensing my muscles because of the pain? Because I was! When it started to hurt, I'd tense up a lot!

Glad that most of it was fantastic. And yes, I would also think that you would be tensing up when it was hurting.
