In that instance, I think you did the right thing. It would have been different had they done everything, but just handing out shoes is the whole job.
In cases like that, I tend to tip only when the service exceeds what they should be doing. I would have done the same as you. Except I probably would have told him why I didn't tip.
Similar for me is when they ask at the grocery store if you want to round up and donate to a charity. I prefer the charity to come to me directly rather than catch me unawares.

When I worked cash at the pizza place when I was a teenager, there was one family that would tip me a dollar every time they came in to pick up their pizza. That dollar meant everything to me. I was always so flattered. I never expected it from customers. I don't like that there is a tip option on some debit machines at stores.

Yes, instead of just paying people more, tips have become the way to earn more money. So there is a lot of pushing it by the business for the consumer to pay it seems.

Similar for me is when they ask at the grocery store if you want to round up and donate to a charity. I prefer the charity to come to me directly rather than catch me unawares. I also don't really like the rounding up to donate to charity, although I often seem to do it. Maybe I just don't want to look bad. But I have certain charities that I want to support, and not by just giving them less than a dollar. I don't really like feeling like I have to make a decision on the spot as to whether or not I want to support this or that charity. My husband is especially careful about charities to support - he reads up on them and checks out how much their highest salary is, things like that. I think that there are many very good charities but also likely many that really should "get out of the charity business." One thing that is somewhat frustrating to me is that in the USA it is relatively easy to establish a nonprofit organization it seems, and it seems like so many people establish their own. I think that there could be more efficiency if nonprofits that are basically striving for the same goals could unite and work together.

I saw a post on facebook explaining that you shouldn't donate at a big box store because they get a tax break for donating to charity with the money you give.
I don't know if that's true. It does make sense. But I'm sure their accountants and tax people have to identify when it was customer donations. Or not.
Anyhow, the facebook post said to donate to the charity directly. I will continue to do that.

I don't know how that works for tax breaks when it is the customer who actually makes the donation through a store. But I also think it is best to donate directly to the charity. Also, many people may not think about this, but if you donate with a credit card, the charity either has to pay the processing fees or sometimes you are asked if you want to cover those. That may not seem like a big deal, but if there is a 2% credit card processing fee, then every $100 worth of donations costs the charity $2. Again that may not seem like a big deal, but just think about charities receiving thousands of dollars in credit card donations and how those processing fees add up. If possible, it seems best to send a check, especially if making quite a large donation. However, paying credit card processing fees is worth it if the convenience of using a credit card means that people are more likely to donate.

You can tip cash to the driver, but unfortunately there's nowhere on the apps where you can indicate that you intend to tip cash. A lot of drivers can see the tips and they are likely to not take the order if there's no tip. They'll keep declining it, which ultimately makes the delivery later and later than it should be.

That makes me fuming angry.
What are you tipping? The delivery! If the delivery hasn't happened yet, how do you know how much to tip? Maybe you want to see how fast it's delivered, the respect to your property, his manner in talking to you...
That there - them choosing not to take deliveries because of low tip - is what is wrong with this whole system. Tipping should be on top of income. Income should be enough. Tipping should be voluntary and dependent on all the variables in the situation.
I'm not made of money. Ordering pizza as a single mom of three is a big deal and a big treat. To automatically pay 20% more for a pizza is ridiculous, especially with that attitude. That driver does not deserve any tip!

In "the olden days," we just paid cash for the pizza on arrival, and the delivery person would not know how much of a tip, if any, they were going to get until they brought the pizza. And if you go to a restaurant, the server does not know what you are going to tip until you pay after the meal. It seems odd to me to give a tip for a service before you receive the service.

That's why I have just started picking up pizza the few times we do order it. One less thing to worry about.

Ugh. After a long day at work, if I'm ordering pizza, it's because I'm exhausted. I'm ordering because I *don't* want to do anything. If I had enough energy to go to the pizza place, I'd have enough energy to make a healthy meal.

To me, pizza IS my idea of a healthy meal. I get the kind with pineapple on it, so I've got fruit, and there is dairy, and then there are tomatoes in the pizza sauce!
