Just finished watching this one. I only give it a 3 on the Sidney scale, meaning "of limited quality." I just do not really like this one. It's another one that also makes little to no sense to me. Why would Stoddard kidnap Richter, torture him, and then release him? Was it just to make sure that the report had not been filed? But if it had, what would that do to Stoddard? And it's not like he could then release Richter. So why not just kill Richter outright?? And then the whole Betty/Marissa/Sarah thing is just kind of bizarre to me. How would she really know all that stuff about Stoddard and "el Presidente" and yet not seem to know things about Richter? Maybe she really is CIA, since CIA probably would not have had reason to know a lot about Richter prior to the events of this episode??? In any case, I don't enjoy her character very much.

This episode has always bored me. I don't mind them trying to save Dr. Richter for Murdock, but the woman was just crazy. It made no sense and really didn't add anything to the storyline to me.

Yeah, I never really understand her character....apparently she really is one of Richter's patients, right? So did she just want to rescue him like Murdock did? What was she doing in Richter's house??? How did she get in? Did she let herself in often, because she wanted to actually be his daughter and she thought she was the most special patient he had? (She said something to Murdock about how all his patients feel the same way Murdock did about Richter, so I think in hindsight she was referring to herself.)

I was never for sure.
I don't mind mystery in an episode, but I like to seem to make sense as to why the mystery is there.
It felt like maybe a couple of episode ideas thrown together in one big soup of an episode.

Yes, I would have liked things to have come together at the end. But instead we just have Betty/Marissa show up with the guy whose house Face was watching. Really bizarre to me. How could she have been so connected with the team that she would have shown up with that guy? Maybe she really is CIA and she's monitoring everything about the team!

Really gave Stockwell some background information, huh?

Maybe she's been stalking the team all those years and is the one who provided those video clips that Stockwell shows Carla in season 5.

Well, if I could make some heads or tails out of her and give her some greater purpose, then maybe I would warm up a bit more to her character.

Rewatched this one yesterday and I agree it's not one of the best episodes. It has a great premise, with Murdock asking the team for help to rescue his favourite psychiatrist (and I did like the way Hannibal quickly decided they were going to help, even though Face and BA seemed less enthusiastic!), but as you've said before the addition of Marissa/Sarah is too confusing and shifts the focus away from the rescue mission. I suppose they were trying to go for an overall theme of people pretending to be something they're not, but it became too much about her. I did feel sorry for Face, though, when he realised he'd had no idea she was scamming them - more than once! I would have liked to have seen more scenes with Murdock and Dr Richter as it seems the doctor had figured Murdock out, realising that he's not a crazy as he pretends to be and that's a really interesting part of Murdock's character. Instead we just had the doctor being kidnapped which didn't seem to make any sense. I did enjoy the final scene with them all dressed up for dinner - even BA had made an effort. But then whatever-her-name-was arrived and the episode ended with one final confusing moment!

I agree. Would have preferred if for some reason maybe Murdock and Dr. Richter were kidnapped together (although Murdock has already been kidnapped once in the series) and we could have had more time with those two.....or even to have Dr. Richter working with the team for some reason. Would have made more sense for Dr. Richter's daughter to be kidnapped (maybe to force Dr. Richter to recommend someone for a military position or something?) and the team and Dr. Richter work together to free her. I know that same premise (with variations) has been done many times, though, so maybe it would have been good to just go a whole different route - no kidnapping but for some reason Dr. Richter would need the team's help. What would have been really neat, I think, would be to have Dr. Richter gain some kind of knowledge about the mission that led to the team being arrested. Maybe Dr. Richter could have returned to Vietnam with the team even!

I think this is a very fun but also very confusing episode. The first half is a clear storyline but after that it gets weird. I just don't get the storyline of Betty / Marissa / Sarah. I don't think she adds anything to the story And I would have liked to see more interaction between Murdock and Dr. Richter

I think I would have preferred if Betty/Marissa/Sarah really was Dr. Richter's daughter. Or, as I've previously mentioned in this thread, at least if we found out at the end who she was or why she would know all the information that she apparently did know. It seems to me that she was one of Dr. Richter's patients, but then I don't know how she could know so much about all those people like El Presidente or whoever.

I agree, they really should have had more scenes of Murdock and Richter - they set up a very interesting idea that, perhaps, Richter wasn't being entirely truthful with Murdock, but then wasted it by focussing the rest of the episode on Marissa/Sarah.
