If anyone has the capability to research this....I would be interested in knowing where that stock footage that they use in the opening of the show with the helicopter and guys landing apparently in Vietnam came from. Is that really footage from Vietnam? If so, wouldn't it be interesting to know who was really on that helicopter?

I have no idea, but you often see very similar footage whenver there's anything on TV about the Vietnam war. I don't know how many war correspondents there would have been sent over with the troops back then, but perhaps not many with film crews so that's why there is only a very limited collection of recorded footage which gets used over and over again. As I said, though, I don't know anything about it!

If it's not, my guess was that it was from another movie or show that referenced the Vietnam War. A lot of shows that were produced by the same studios, etc. used the same B footage for things.

This was a great question. I did spend about 10 mins on Youtube looking at Vietnam war footage. There is plenty on there, including helicopters landing. Too much, though. Felt like looking for a needle in a haystack. It probably does need someone who knows where to look.
I have sometimes worried about the footage from a different angle. It certainly looks like genuine news film from the era. Assuming it is and it is from the Vietnam conflict, I wonder how the people who were filmed feel about it, if they are still with us. The war would have been a traumatic experience for them. How would they feel about their images kicking off a light hearted action adventure show? I am not sure how I would feel in their situation.
There is a potential parallel here with the opening sequence of the Six Million Dollar man, which used actual film of a crash. In the real incident, the pilot survived but with life changing injuries. I read that he disliked the crash footage being used on the show.

That's an interesting perspective. I don't know how those who went to Vietnam may feel with that footage being used, but I could understand why the man involved in the actual crash shown at the opening of SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN may feel. I have been involved in an accident that, while nowhere near as severe as that accident, if it had been filmed, I don't think I would want it being shown every week to thousands (millions?) of people over and over.

I have often wondered this for years, is it a real clip from the Vietnam war or is it something that was filmed and made to look 'vintage' for the tv show..? My guess is looks like an actual clip of war footage but it's one of many questions i have about the series and i don't think we shall ever know the truth unfortunately

Also some of the clips used in 'Sound of Thunder' looked genuine enough to make the scenes more dramatic
