In another thread, Sidney wrote this about Kelly: "But she's made out to be a huge deal for him [i.e., Murdock]. A very special love interest."
This got me thinking - what other characters in the series, if any, are made out to be a huge deal for members of the team or "very special love interests" for them? Or was it only Kelly because she was played by Dwight's real-life wife?
I think of Maggie as one made out to be a special love interest for Hannibal. And I guess there was Leslie for Face. Would you consider Rena also a special love interest for Face? And what about for BA - were any of the women they sort of paired him up with considered special love interests for him?

I do think of Maggie as Hannibal's 'very special love interest'. He had a few more formal relationships (more serious than just a hot girl in a bathing suit on his arm). Was the Fire Chief's name Annie? I can't remember her name, but she was played by Stepfanie Kramer from HUNTER. I never saw them as very serious or 'special'. But he was definitely set up with her.
It's funny, though... The only reason why Maggie became 'special' is because she returned. There was great chemistry in BAD ROCK, but the reason why you knew she was special for Hannibal was because the relationship continued. And as HD said in the other thread, her part/their relationship/the chemistry in the DEADLY MANEUVERS was blah. (I'm paraphrasing.) But she still returned and there was a lot you were to infer in their conversation and the fact that he did call on her to help him.
I don't think BA had any 'special' ones. He was set up with a lot of girls, but never did I think there was one that was meant to be a very serious soul-mate type of love interest.

Jody Joy feels like she was meant to be another one for Murdock.
Face had a new squeeze every episode but Leslie Bektall was the only girl he ever loved, right? I recall him saying something like that in CHURCH. It seems like the writers might've been thinking of pairing him up with Amy towards the end of season one but never did.
Hannibal had Maggie, although nothing ever came of that either. BA seemed to get along really well with whatshername from SKINS.
When I first saw the episode with Kelly I didn't get the impression of her being a major love interest at all. She just came off as any other girl-of-the-week to me. I think the reason people see her as a major love interest is because she's played by Dwight Schultz's wife and they're conflating real life with fiction. I learned that her actress was married to Dwight after seeing the episode and she still just seems like any other GOTW.

AHHHHH! Lisa! The blind girl. She was another one that Face had a special relationship with. I think that was WASTE 'EM. I don't know if they had as serious a relationship as him and Rina, but there was always this thing about her not being able to see his good looks... He was softer with her. I didn't think he'd scam her, which he did with all the other women, even Rina.
Did he scam Leslie? I don't think so.

I didn't think Jody Joy was meant to be serious. She was 'fun' for Murdock. I never got that they wanted him to be serious with her at all.

I kind of wish they had Lisa return in another episode. It could have been interesting to even see a bit of a story arc with her and Face. Since he could not charm her with his good looks, I feel like he was maybe more vulnerable with her or something. I also don't think he would have tried to scam her or just use her.

Good choices all around. I think for Face: Leslie, Lisa, and Rena are good choices. For Hannibal: I concur with Maggie Murdock: I agree that Kelly was one, but I like the idea of Jody Joy. I think they both play to Murdock's strengths. Maybe a combination of the two characters? B.A.: I have always thought his best romance was definitely the girl in SKINS as well. Maybe not a serious one, but definitely the most believable one in my opinion. Frankie: The girl in REVOLUTION. I hope he went back to her. Amy: Daniel Running Bear. Tawnia: Daniel I guess. She married him anyway.

I'm still under the belief that, had Melinda remained on the show, the writers would have tried a romantic aspect between Face and Amy. Murdock's banter with Amy often came across as brother-sister sometimes with how playful it was and how even Amy brought into the jokes. The Face/Amy relationship had all of the classic signs that you see in other TV relationships before the characters end up together, including one character learning something very deep and personal about the past of the other.

HD, for Tawnia, you wrote "Daniel" and that she married him - but I think you are meaning Brian Lefcourt, right?

I agree that the writers may have gone that route. As you wrote, Amy was the one whom Face opened up to about his relationship with Leslie, and she was sympathetic towards him there. They also had the playful scene where Face and Amy were newlyweds and Face carried her into the hotel room.

Yes, I meant Brian. And I don't know. Watching them in RABBIT, they had more the best friends/brother-sister vibe, even when playing a newlywed couple.

For B.A., I would like to make the case for the woman from Pure Dee Poison. OK she and BA didnt really get it together, but there was a warmth and sadness about the way they had to part at the end. I think the actress played that scene and indeed the whole ep really well. I would have liked to have seen her get the equivalent role in Skins, just like they brought back Markie back for the second time in Hot Styles.

I think that character name in PURE DEE POISON was Stephanie. She was sweet. I liked how she seemed to side with BA in thinking that Murdock was a bit "out there" at least in the montage scene. I feel like she was making some faces about Murdock at some point in that scene. But I have not watched that one for quite a while.

I don't think I would have like to see Face and Amy get together as a couple. It might have been fun for them to get together for one episode (for some reason I haven't quite figured out yet!), but by the end of the episode they realise they've made a big mistake and they go back to normal. Anything more than that would have spoiled the friendship element of the show for me.
I don't like it when TV writers feel the need to make characters in shows go from friends to romantic couples - especially in shows with larger ensemble casts when they insist on keep swapping the couples around every season! Even for shows that run for years, if they've established a strong friendship between characters that already appeals to viewers, why change it?
Lesley is clearly now out of the picture, but I would love to have seen Face develop a real relationship with Lisa from WASTE 'EM! There was something different about the way he behaved around her. Perhaps because with any other woman he just has to flash a smile or a wink in her direction and she's putty in his hands (weird expression, but you know what I mean!), but because Lisa couldn't see his good looks he didn't have to act up to that image (and I do believe he puts on an act with women, behaving in a way he assumes they expect him to act because he looks handsome and sophisticated) and instead he could just be himself around her. His true personality is a very sweet, decent guy and he and Lisa would have made a lovely couple.

I also don't want to see couples being swapped around with ensemble casts. I think if that really happened, it would be fairly awkward for all of the ensemble to remain as close of friends as before. Even if someone realizes that they do not want to be romantic with another, if they have been linked as a romantic couple and then a best friend becomes linked with the same person, I think it is awkward and can strain the friendship.
I also would have liked Face to have a real relationship with Lisa. I think it would have been neat if he had gone to the effort to learn to read and write in Braille (not sure if "write" is the correct word, but you know what I mean). He and Lisa could have exchanged letters and the other guys would not know what they were writing about. And it would have shown that he really cared about Lisa if he had taken the time to learn that and to interact a bit with her world.
