You get home and realize that you grossly underpaid for something. Your best guess is the person at the cash entered the wrong amount into the debit machine by $50. You had used your 'tap' debit card so you didn't see the amount and didn't have to press 'ok'.
What would you do? Would you contact the store?

Call them, tell them I underpaid for the thing, advise them to promote the cashier who checked me out for not noticing, then hang up.

I have to agree with Bert to some degree.
Depending on what it was, I would probably call and explain the mistake. They might write it off or they might ask to take the rest over the phone. Either way, I would probably call and try to make it right.

Does it make a difference what kind of store it was?
If it's a small store family owned sort of thing vs a box store like Wal-Mart or giant franchise like McDonalds?

By the way, I think Bert is being facetious. He is suggesting to call and kind of laugh at it and hang up so he won't be held accountable. Although, I'm sure they have call display and can call back.
Am I right, Bert? Or were you being earnest?

Am I right, Bert? Or were you being earnest? I was guessing he was being facetious too, although I'm not opposed to that approach. I definitely think it can depend on the type of store, but I would probably call regardless and let them know. The larger store is more likely to write it off and not worry about it. But for me, I'm just the type of person that calls and lets them know.

I don't think it makes a difference. As mentioned, if you contact them, there is a possibility they will tell you that it is their mistake and not to worry about it. But if they do charge you, you are not out any more money than what you would have paid had the price been rung up correctly. And you will have gained something better than money, which is integrity and the satisfaction of knowing you did the right thing. You could also use this as a teachable moment for your kids.

I was actually insulted by your last sentence there - telling me that I could use it as a teachable moment. But I know you very well, amyk, and I know you were being earnest in your suggestion. You'd never say anything mean to insult anyone!
But when I first read it, a few days ago, I was like... I've taught my kids well already, thank you very much! I always set an excellent example for them! How DARE you tell me how to parent my kids!!!! haha...
What ended up happening is I called the McDonalds and they had no idea how to do anything about it. They just told me to forget about it. The whole thing was over before I even posted this thread. I was just wondering if anyone else would be like me and call and try to GIVE the McDonalds more money.

Glad you realized that I did not mean to imply that you have not taught your kids well.....I meant that this would be one more additional "teachable moment" to show them how they might handle a similar situation in the future. But maybe this is a "teachable moment" for me to consider that I may need to be more specific or careful when writing things because it is often hard for people (like me) to communicate only through writing and things can easily be misunderstood - I think more so than when speaking to one another and carrying on a real-time conversation, although even then of course there can also be misunderstandings.

Amy: I'm the same way. I know that I can easily be misunderstood via written word. I have tried to be more careful over time, but I know it still happens. Sidney: What did I tell ya? They wrote it off. But like you, I would have called and let them know the error.

I actually thought of a similar situation that happened a few months ago. I ordered my groceries online, like I usually do. And when my groceries came, I had an extra bag of items. What would you do? Would you call? I called and asked what to do with it. They told me to just keep it because of Covid, they definitely couldn't put anything back on the shelves or give to another customer.

Both experiences have happened to me. In both cases, I let them know and I was told not to worry about it. I have also had the reverse where I paid and got less. When I called, I was told to bring everything back (not easy when you live far enough away) or to bring my receipt and get in-store credit for the missing items next time.
