What proves Face is mechanical in the series? That he's really good with his hands and building/fixing things without the assistance/guidance of one of the others?
Today I was rereading Book 34 of my EPIC fan fiction and I came across this line from Murdock: “This here is the fuse box,” he told her. She turned to listen and watch. He pulled open the door. He pointed to the labels. “I’ve pretty much labelled everything. It’s not that difficult to navigate. Even Faceman should be able to do it.”
Murdock is just teasing there. But I started to think... Wait a second... Is Face at the same level as the other three in terms of engineering/building/mechanics? I immediately thought of him relying on Frankie's advice for the brakes on the vette. I mean, that car was his baby. Certainly he knew enough about cars to have either fixed it himself or not really listen to this stranger's advice about his car.
Then my brain jumped to Face wearing a suit when they were doing a build. I can't remember exact examples of this, but I know it happened. Then I thought about him getting out of work so the others were doing all the work... And I suddenly thought... What if when Face does complete things in a build, it's because one of the others gave him explicit instructions. Otherwise he was a little clueless?
Can you cite examples where Face showed he was as brilliant with mechanical things as the others?

Frankly, I think of B.A. as the only one who's really mechanically-inclined. Murdock is shown as being able to operate pretty much anything they come across, but that doesn't necessarily mean he can fix it. (I still think the "built an ultralight out of his head" thing was super-unrealistic. But it was adorable, so I'll forgive it.) All the guys are pretty much shown as helping with a build, but then, many characters often are, and I always assumed they were told what to do, probably by B.A. (or, in some cases, it's obvious to just about anyone that this needs the rust cleaned off, this stuck thing needs some WD-40, this needs to be moved over here, etc.). I mean, they can be shown to be cleaning, painting, moving, assembling, polishing, etc., but it's usually B.A. shown to be doing the really technical stuff, right?

I also think really BA is both the brains and the brawn behind most of the technical stuff that the team is involved with. Face could not even drive in nails in the one with the pacifists, although I think that was going overboard with his incompetence. So, no, I can't think of any time that Face was brilliant with mechanical things.

But... IMO, he doesn't have to be. Face running numbers, OTOH... it took me longer to warm up to him than the other guys, but that's what made me love him.

I think as soldiers, they probably got some basic training how to fix things, and also in Nam. Also I think that if you work on stuff around somebody who understands how that stuff work, you inadvertly learn too. So I do not think that Face has any specific provess, but he is also a soldier and a guy and does some building every other day. Thus I assume he is not entirely clueless, although by far not BA's level. I do not have any support for these thoughts though. As for Frankie, well they had to give him some lines somehow...

Welcome to the forum, akin! Agreed about Frankie's inabilities with mechanical expertise, although I guess he did have some special effects expertise. Why BA and Face ever listened to his advice, especially when they barely knew him, I don't know.

And thank you, I am super happy to be here.

HA! That's cool. I had no idea... Or maybe I should say: "IHNI"!
