I picked up one of those Star Trek fan books at the used book sale because there was a bit in it about DS (whose name is misspelled as "Shultz," ugh.)
Apparently the book THE COSMIC CODE by Heinz Pagels really influenced him not to quit show business. It's a book about quantum physics written for laymen; I think DS has mentioned he has always loved physics.
The bit that talks about TAT quotes him as saying: "It (TAT) is the way you want to see it. If you want to see it as the epitome of art, it will be. If you want to see it as the height of exploitation and degradation, it will be. Neither of them is true. The truth is you're simply scratching out a living. I'm a song-and-dance man. That's the truth, and there is a relaxation that comes with it."
Also a quote from the National Review on DS: "(Schultz) brought distinction to an otherwise shallow, if profitable, 4-year enterprise."
