I haven't had a chance to read them aside from the Murdock issue of "War Stories" (the other series is "Shotgun Wedding," which makes me think of TILL DEATH DO US PART.) The first one is solo acts, the other one is a team story. Anybody else get them yet? Anyway, my impressions of the Murdock story...
*spoilers below*
Murdock is drawn to look like SC, but his performance and style are very much in DS' ballpark. I didn't realize that the Team in the new storyline are 1st Gulf War veterans rather than Iraq War. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me if the movie is set in the present, since the Gulf War was almost 20 years ago.
The story is in a US Army psych hospital in Mexico (), rather than a VA hospital. Murdock is trying to escape by disguising himself as a priest, which seems much more like a Face thing to me. He gets caught by the orderlies and they take him in to his shrink's office. The shrink starts interviewing him about how he ended up there, yada yada, and Murdock goes into flashback mode about the time he landed a chopper in hostile territory to rescue a downed couple of pilots. There are some priceless moments, notably:
1. Billy! He is "there" the whole time and Murdock keeps trying to reassure the doc that Billy is a good dog and won't bite. ;D Loved that.
2. The dialogue is very much in Murdock's "voice" and felt organic to me.
3. At one point the doc asks Murdock what his life would be like if it were a book, and he responds it would have to be a pop-up book to be accurate.
4. There are a couple of really funny movie references, including THE WIZARD OF OZ and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.
Things I didn't really like:
1. It's quite short, only about 30 pages, and there are more illustrations than actual dialogue.
2. Without giving too much away, there is some actual violence here. I can see Murdock only getting violent if one of his friends were in mortal danger.
3. In the flashback scenes, I couldn't visibly recognize him as Murdock aside from his clothes (maybe it was the shorter hair.)
4. Some of the drawings lack "punch," but then again, I don't read many comics or graphic novels (unlike Murdock himself.)
I may pick up the other ones if I get a chance, but definitely wanted to read this one.
And no, we don't find out what "HM" really stands for here, either.
