Original air date: January 23, 1983 Written by: Frank Lupo & Stephen Cannell
"A desperate but ambitious newspaper reporter, Amy Allen, wants to prove the existence of the ATeam, four GI that help people in need. When she finds them she hires them, because he co-worker Al Massey is missing in Mexico" ( I did not write the synopsis-it's a copy and paste)
This episode for me using the Sidney Rating Scale is a 5 ( good). The episode does a nice job of introducing us to the characters and the premise of the show. Also being a 2 hour episiode, I like the pacing -they have more time to develop the scenes better. But I can't get passed Fake Face so that knocks it down several points for me
So here we go!!! From the discussion about starting the fan viewing over again, it seemed like the general agreement was to keep the individual posts shorter so it is easier to read. The entire thread may get lengthy as we discuss things and one thing moves to another. So maybe just pick one thing you love or one thing you hate ( like Fake Face ) or a particular scene to talk about and we'll go from there. But I'm not in charge so you all do what you think makes the most sense
So away we go ( and LadyJay hands the baton off too........?)

So, the one with FakeFace... I couldn't bring myself to watch it completely (I actually speed watched it in about 4-5 minutes), but I'll give it a 4.
I think Murdock's antics are a bit too forced when he's with Lynch (a bit like in BEAST when he tries to "prove" he's insane. He was more subtle with Dr Richter in DOCTOR IS OUT when he was telling him his dream). But I love the small smile on his face when Lynch leaves. And we have the first mention of Billy too!
What saves the episode for me is that scene by the airport with BA and Hannibal.

I can watch it all the way through just fine with Fake(!)Face. I actually give the show a 9. It's not a 10 because of Tim and the corny airplane flip at the end, but it's an amazing episode.
The story, the flying, the jokes, the everything... It's incredible. I love this episode and Fake(!)Face really doesn't make it that bad for me. I don't like him. I like Dirk much better. Time was too young and too tall and didn't have the charisma like Dirk. But I still really like the episode.
Tim was freakishly tall. Murdock had to look up to him!

You know, I've been reading what I posted about this episode for the last forum viewing and I realize there is much more I liked about it than I remember.

I think it's one of the best episodes. They couldn't have done a better job introducing the series. Everything was great with the exception of Dirk Benedict not being in it.

I love Murdocks smirk at the end of his scene with Lynch - that smirk was the beginning of the love affair for me But my favorite scene was the one Morgan mentions with BA and Hannibal outside the airport. I absolutely love Hannibals facial expression after he says " this road is no where near the airport " and then the plane flies overhead. I like Amy in the episode - I like that she was introduced as this feisty newspaper journalist. I wish they would have continued to show her more at her job - fighting for stories and standing up to the boss. But I don't like that she blackmailed her way onto the team

FakeFace (when breaking Murdock out of the VA) says that the Surgeon General of the Air Force is the one who specifically chose Murdock's file....so that means that Murdock was in the Air Force, not the Army, right? And also, is FakeFace wearing an Air Force uniform here? Or is that an Army uniform?

Oh, also FakeFace scammed that car off of Cactus Jack Perkins (?) - is that the same name as Cactus Jack in CUP A JOE? Except I think FakeFace said this one is a rodeo rider maybe?

Also, is Hannibal lying when he tells Amy that they think Murdock is insane? Or does he really think Murdock is insane?

I think he is lying as not to blow Murdocks cover - this episiode all but spells out that Murdock is not really insane and just faking to stay at the VA Not saying he doesn't have issues but nothing that requires full time care - since this was the first episode which set the stage for the series I believe the intent of the show was always to be that Murdock was faking

He was apparently lying to Amy a lot, right? He also said he was from Montana. I don't think we can believe anything he says. Remember, later on BA even says 'who knows' when someone asks him if Hannibal was married... He is just an enigma.
I like that you caught that air force comment, amyk.
Hmm... I just an idea for another thread.

I just finished watching this one a short time ago. I am using Sidney's scale to rank it. I do have to take off a point or so for not having Dirk. In addition, I take off another point for some parts of it that seem to move a bit slow for me, especially the beginning. I think they should perhaps have brought the team in a bit more quickly. And then I take off another point or so for Amy blackmailing her way onto the team. So my final ranking for this one is a 7.
