FakeFace (when breaking Murdock out of the VA) says that the Surgeon General of the Air Force is the one who specifically chose Murdock's file....so that means that Murdock was in the Air Force, not the Army, right? And also, is FakeFace wearing an Air Force uniform here? Or is that an Army uniform? Yup and FakeFace does appear to be wearing an Air Force uniform. Murdock was definitely in the Air Force also the nurse in that scene refers to Murdock by rank when she is calling for his release

I think you can safely ignore most of the information given during the pilot ep. I guess that the writers thought spec forces is army, pilot is air force. Yup were done. But when they had to write murdock back in they did some better research. The birthdates on the files are also really off. I also cannot believe that any of them would wear anything else but their own uniforms. There's a certain honour in that. Also if Murdock was air force he would not hold the rank of captain. If he switched to army he would not be put in the va by the usaf surgeon general.
For me, murdock stays army.

The 'writers' were Lupo and Cannell. I wouldn't just dismiss their original vision for the show.

No but they wouldn't have put as much thought into a pilot as in the real deal.

I would actually hold the info in the pilot to be truer - the pilot is their vision for the show - what they initially thought the show should be so. I still contend that the lazy writing came after the pilot - it probably just seemed easier to have them all in the same branch of the military rather than try to explain how an Air Force pilot came to be teamed up with a Army Special Forces Unit. I did read a few articles online that said during Vietnam - Air Force Pilots ( although rare) could have been used to transport Special Forces. Or he could have switched branches. I believe he would have been able to keep his rank because an Army, Air Force, or Marine captain is equivalent in rank. Also we come back to - we know that Murdock knows how to fly fighter jets - he would not have learned that in the Army - that would be the Air Force or Navy. So I respect your opinion but Murdock is Air Force for me.

Yeah. What she said. The pilot by definition is trying to sell the show and trying to get the network to invest in it and audiences to watch it, they're going to put the work into it.

I agree with Ladyjay. Plus, if Murdock flew with the Thunderbirds, he had to be in the Air Force (I think).

I like the theory that he's getting worse in playing with it. I wonder if that comes and goes in phases.

There also was a combat chopper squadron named the thunderbirds.
Let's agree to disagree. haha either way, murdock is cool. The pretty blues would look good on him though. Ooh...

Oh yes Murdock is the coolest! And would look so handsome in dress blues! My only argument against the Thunderbirds being the combat chopper squadron is Lynch says " he flew with the Thunderbirds before the war" 1) the average tv viewer is not going to know that there was a chopper squadron called the Thunderbirds - when you hear Thunderbirds you automatically think of the Air Force Thunderbirds 2) he flew with the Thunderbirds before the war - wouldn't a combat chopper squadron only be active during combat (I don't know - only throwing it out there) 3) it still would not explain how Murdock knows how to fly jets.
But its ok - you can have Army Murdock and I'll keep Air Force Murdock - he would be so adorable in his flight suit!

It's exactly what I wanted to say Ladyjay, and you said it so much better than I would have. ;-)
And I love Air Force Murdock too! ^^

Murdock wore an army uniform. He was in the army. There is a picture in a thread in the other forum.

Another inconsistency between the pilot and later in the series is that Zack in the pilot says that the team went over the wall before the trial, right? But later they say that Ray stood by them during the trial and even the opening dialog says that they were sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. So in that case, it does seem like they decided to change the vision for the show a bit.
