Not sure why they would burn the guy at the stake instead of just shoot him. Shooting him with a hunting rifle seems more like a stereotypical hillbilly thing to do to me.

It's almost like they started with a racism episode and decided to change the characters midway. And someone said..."Um...you can't burn a black guy at the stake."

I think it would have been more powerful it it had been an episode about racism and if they were burning a black man at the stake merely because he was black. Maybe that would have been "too deep" for an A-TEAM episode, but I think it would have made for a good episode. As much as I love HOLIDAY IN THE HILLS, I think it may have been even better if there had been an issue of racism being addressed in it.

It would have been a great way to incorporate B.A. into the storyline more too, especially since no one on the team thinks anything about him being black.

Not gonna lie, watching The A-Team lay a smackdown on the KKK would've been much cooler than generic hillbillies. Also agreed that it would've been a good way to incorporate BA into the storyline more.

Yes, I do wish they had an episode about racism, whether this one or some other one. That would have been so cool to see the team defeat a bunch of racists.

Makes me wonder if that was more a network decision, especially in the first season when they had to rework so much.

Don't know if it was already the '80s or the later '70s, but actually LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE had some episodes that dealt with racism - yes, set in the 1870s/1880s or so! Not only with African-American racism, but they also dealt with racism against Native Americans (although I do realize that the books are now considered to have racist elements, the TV show seemed to go against that).

I don't recall every show from that time period, but it seems like QUANTUM LEAP dealt with it too. It's a shame that the A-TEAM didn't. Of course, maybe the producers, etc. didn't want to because of the cast. I SPY had a racism episode and after that one, Bill Cosby and Robert Culp spoke out about making every episode that way. Maybe something similar happened here?

What do you mean that they spoke out against making every episode that way? Do you mean that they didn't want the show to have each week be an anti-racism episode?

From what I have read and heard from super fans of I SPY, they wanted to make sure that the show didn't become a weekly fight about racism. They wanted the two leads portrayed as equals. It's not that there were not racism episodes, it's that they didn't want every episode to have those underpinnnings.

Watched this one with the boys. They didn't really care for it. And this is WITHOUT me talking about it in a bad way. That opening flight scene is still one of the best ever for the series. My wife didn't get why Amy took the guy around. She could have just dropped him off at the courthouse. I wonder if FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX is a good movie?

Rewatched this one today and I loved it. I can see from this thread that this ep seems to divide opinion though. I love that the mission wasn't one they were hired for, they just stumbled across a man in trouble and decided to help. I agree the premise that he was going to be burnt at the stake because of a new road was a little OTT, but it doesn't matter, he was heroically rescued by The A Team! I loved that Hannibal was very hands-on in this one, taking the baddies on that detour himself instead of delegating to one of the others (as we've talked about in another thread). And in yet another thread we're talking about Hannibal teasing Face and he does it really well here. Face is complaining that he can't possibly get what they need, but once Hannibal says "Well, he was a lot younger then," it's enough to push Face to make the extra effort to get the supplies. I would love to have known more about the mission they had just finished - Why was Face dressed as a priest? Why did it sound like it was a bit of a disaster! I didn't like Amy's separate storyline, though. Why take a complete stranger to the hospital to see Murdock? Why, if she knew she was being followed, did she lead the MPs straight to the bus station where she was due to meet the guys. It was clever of her to page Lynch over the loudspeaker, but she could have avoided that whole situation if she'd taken them somewhere else to throw them off the scent. She basically confirmed their suspicions that she was working with the team.

I agree on the Amy part. Bad storyline for her; bad execution.
Don't get me wrong. I hate most of this episode. But that opening sequence until they crash: Genius!

I love it when Face and Hannibal sing to hide the noise of the aeroplane - lovely harmonies! They sing again in other episodes, is it always 'You Are My Sunshine?'
