We got onto this topic in another thread, and I would like to explore something a bit. Here's a quote from PicoBob re Dwight Shultz and accents:
This made me think about the difference between producing an accent and mimicking a specific person. I think Dwight was perhaps more often mimicking someone than just coming up with a specific regional accent. For example, he definitely was impersonating Marlon Brando in TROUBLE ON WHEELS. We also know he is good at impersonating Kissinger in MIND GAMES.
Can others here think of examples of Dwight either giving Murdock an accent and/or impersonating another real-life person? (I suppose the whole character of Murdock has a bit of an accent, right?)

In West Coast Turnaround after the guys hijack the trucks and get ready to set off, Murdock says something along the lines of "all right let's move 'em up and head on out" - I think he says this line impersonating John Wayne?
I do love the dynamite shop scene in Diamonds and Dust - I'll have to watch something with Peter O'Toole in it now just to compare accents ...

Good spot about Dwight doing John Wayne, tiptoptina!
There's a lot for us to think of here! I have two so far which I think I know.
In ROAD TO HOPE, Dwight's preacher voice is a direct impersonation of Burt Lancaster from the film "Elmer Gantry", which is about a travelling preacher.
TRIAL BY FIRE - When he takes the stand, he's mimicking Humphrey Bogart from a comparable but serious scene from the film "The Caine Mutiny".
One I had been wondering about was Dwight's "Insane Wayne" voice. It could be someone specific, or just a voice that Dwight made up.

And wasn't it Walter Cronkite in DOUBLE HEAT?

Yeah, I don't think I've ever actually seen any movie with Peter O'Toole, so I also cannot really compare what Dwight does in that scene with Peter O'Toole. You're right about that John Wayne impersonation. I also think that Murdock impersonates James Cagney in some episode, but I can't remember which one.

I'm not even going to pretend to be cool and know who Murdock is impersonating half-the time. I always take your words for it. I didn't even know he was doing a Darth Vader until you guys told me. They go over my head.

I've just noticed that if you read this on a PC, you can see Murdock doing the John Wayne impression at the end of Sidney's posts :-)

He did a great Sylvester the Cat in MIND GAMES. I think he did Bullwinkle too during that ep! Wasnt there also did a Porky Pig after the team raided the bad guy's club in OUT OF TOWNERS. A few others I thought of - I think Dwight is doing Richard Nixon when he's on the loudspeaker election campaigning in the van in WHITE BALLOT. He does another Humphrey Bogart impression as part of his Phillip Marlow obsession in MALTESE COW. I need to think about when Dwight did James Cagney. I dont know the answers to the next ones but I am convinced they are so specific they must be impersonations. - 'Boowie Boone Murdock' from MISSION OF PEACE! It sounds like some kind of archaic American accent. - the pregnant woman from COWBOY GEORGE. Think that one sounds somewhat British.

Is he doing Carol Channing when he is the ghost in JUDGMENT DAY (for the costume party)?

I seem to really struggle with his impersonations. Often I (correctly, apparently) assume he's doing an impression of someone, but I have no idea who it is!

Thank you Amyk. I didnt know Channing's voice but I've listened to a few YouTube videos of her and its a great spot. I assumed we'd never get that one.
Couple of others. I reckon "Captain Cab" is Adam West from the 1960s Batman. Not sure who "Sockie" is though!
Murdock's "Lefty" voice from WASTE EM is James Mason. (Full disclosure: I saw that on IMDB, but its correct.)

All the references are quite old. I'm surprised he never did a Captain Kirk. If the team was made today, I wonder who Murdock would do...

If it were made today, and he was doing current celebrities, I probably would not even know any of them! The only reason I knew so many in the 80s is probably because they were old celebrities - not even celebrities who were current in the 80s.
I feel like I read somewhere that Dwight used to imitate celebrities in his childhood, which would probably explain him doing those older celebrities.

Most guys I knew in high school did impressions actually. They *ALL* could do every character in The Simpsons, for example. They were all pretty good at them, too. I'm really envious of people that can do that. Sometimes I'll watch YouTube videos of impressions and I just love it. Dana Carvey does all four Beatles and he does them so well!!! I especially like the girls doing impressions. Ariana Grande can do almost any female singing voice. She most have excellent control over her voice.
I do a pretty mean Liza Manelli.
